Photoshop Masking: Selection Techniques

One of the most important Photoshop skills you require as a designer and image editor is Photoshop Masking. You need to be able to work out the several masking techniques available at Photoshop. This is because masking not only adds great effects to the image but also gives it a real look.
The first step to masking is Selection. There are a number of selection techniques and tools in Photoshop that you can use to mask your image. It’s up to you which one you choose, keeping in mind the nature of your image.

Magic Wand Tool

Magic Wand Tool is a one-click selection tool that can be really handy when you are doing the image masking service. Unlike other Photoshop tools which can sometimes be difficult to work with, Magic Wand Tool magically outlines the part of the image that needs selection with just one click of a mouse. The tool is best for images with clean, well-defined edges. For image with fuzzy or blurred edges, the results aren’t up to the level.

Quick Selection Tool

It is a quick and easy way of selecting similar to the Magic Wand Tool. However, unlike the Magic Wand, Quick Selection Tool has zero tolerance. You can use it to make a new selection or subtract from it.

Lasso Tool

Lasso Tool is an extremely useful tool for clipping out images. It is easy to handle and work with. However, its main drawback is that it is not editable and you can’t draw smooth curves with it.

Eraser/ Magic Eraser/Background Eraser Tool

You will find this a handy tool, doing the job with much ease. You just need to adjust the tolerance level and the tool would erase much of the background. However, it’s still an amateurish tool that can leave pieces of the background behind. Also, the background near the image is difficult to erase as there are high chances that part of your image may also get removed. In most of the cases, it’s not advisable to use this tool.
These techniques are simple and applicable to less-complicated images. Images isolated on a white background and not having any shadows or reflections  behind are ideal for using these tools.
